Abstract:
Discusses the archaeological sequence, economy and environmental impact of Clatterford Roman Villa, based upon the results of a recent geophysical survey. The investigation revealed the plan of the later villa complex and suggested that the villa, or its proto-settlement, may date to the time of the Roman Conquest. Later in the first century AD a road was established across the valley bottom. During the third century AD extensive surfaces were laid out over the fringe of the valley bottom, adjacent to the villa. It is believed that these might have been stockyards. The villa was abandoned in the fourth century. Includes separately authored reports on:
