Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The article discusses the form and function of the stone-built range at Manor Farm, Hambledon, a former residence belonging to the medieval bishops of Winchester. It draws on the records of the bishopric and recently secured tree-ring dates, and discusses which individuals it was intended to accommodate, and whether its form and function changed over time. The significance of the distinction between the bishop's chamber and the great chamber, a distinction recorded in several episcopal houses, is considered, and there is also a brief discussion of the entire medieval manorial complex at Hambledon and its place within the network of medieval episcopal residences in the south of England.
