Abstract:
In 1805 James Wigmore was killed by a supposed highwayman near Stockbridge. The event was commemorated by a wayside cross. The victim's horse was also commemorated by the outline of a white horse cut into the nearby hillside. The paper reviews the evidence for the two monuments (both generally thought to be lost) and describes the restoration of the horse in 2000.
