Abstract:
A summary of preliminary experimental work associated with the author's doctoral research. Two sets of experiments were carried out to try to ascertain how denticulated and notched tools could have been used. The first experiment was undertaken at Abri-Romani, Spain, using reproduction tools of local flint to shape a point on a pine branch, previously charred in a fire to assist shaping. The second experiments took place in Cambridge, using hardwood dowels, which proved to be much harder to work; an unsuccessful attempt was first made to sharpen a dowel without the aid of fire and even after prior charring the task was much more difficult to achieve than when using green pine. Macro-damage to the flint tools was slight when working with the charred wood and, although there was some damage due to working uncharred dowel, the tools seemed to be very durable. These observations are consistent with the lack of wear damage on archaeological examples of notched tools.
