Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Some results of excavation and survey undertaken on behalf of the Compton Bassett Area Research Project are reported. The development of three villages -- Compton Basset, Yatesbury and Cherhill -- is studied in the context of settlement patterns in earlier periods and with reference to the post-medieval topography. The dynamic aspects of medieval settlement are emphasised, highlighting the limitations of OS map-based studies, which rely on an assumption of the stability of settlement patterns. | ||||||
