Abstract:
Examines evidence for religious continuity between the Late Roman and early medieval periods. The author looks at the role and location of Roman cemeteries, especially Kingsholm which was later the site of an Anglo-Saxon palace. The topography of the Roman town, and in particular the area outside the Roman walls to the west, is considered in relation to early Christian structures such as the church of St Mary de Lode and the minster of 679 AD. It is suggested that the topography of the western suburb area in the late Anglo-Saxon period was dictated by the position of these churches. The location of the portion of Roman wall cross-cutting the minster grounds and date of its demolition are considered. Evidence for the inclusion of this area in the tenth-century Anglo-Saxon burh is presented, and its commercial and defensive roles are discussed.
