Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report of historical research, excavations and a landscape survey relating to the mansion. Originally a seventeenth-century hunting lodge, it was extensively rebuilt in the early-eighteenth century and, apart from some nineteenth-century additions, remained largely unaltered until its demolition in the 1970's. The architecture of the main house is described from old photographs, along with other buildings and structures which are still standing. Excavation revealed the overall plan of the house and the three principal phases of construction could be identified. The report describes the evidence from each phase. The remaining masonry above plinth level was recorded and then demolished for safety reasons. The landscape survey looked at the relation of the Jacobean hunting lodge to the former walled deer park to the west of the site, and the substantial landscaping which took place during the eighteenth century, including a formal enclosure to the west of the house. | |||||
