Abstract:
The introduction of coinage into Britain is first considered, and interpreted not as the invasion of new groups of people, but as the introduction and spread of a new idea along already existing social channels. Secondly it is suggested that the earliest inscribed coinage was not issued by kings with a territorial basis, and so not susceptible to political interpretation. Thirdly the evidence for the impact and spread of a moneyed market economy is discussed. Au
