Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A report outlining the results of excavations conducted during October and November 1994. The excavations identified eight phases of activity, dating from the thirteenth century up to the present day. Documentary and cartographic sources suggest that the site formed an integral part of the medieval town, developing, by the sixteenth century, into a prime piece of land which was exploited for its natural coal resources. An expansion of industrialisation within the Black Country as a whole led to a sharp increase in the density of occupation within Dudley in the late seventeenth century, and this was seen on site in the division, sub-division and intensive occupation of land parcels. This rather disjointed process continued up to the mid-nineteenth century when the brewery was established. There are reports on: `The pottery' by Stephanie Ratkai (326--33) laying particular emphasis on the medieval; `Ceramic roof tile', `Glass', `Metalwork', and `Animal bone', all by Lynne Bevan (and all on page 334); `Clay tobacco pipes' by David Higgins (334--8); finally an `Appendix' (341--2) lists all documentary, cartographic, and photographic sources consulted. | |||||||||||
