Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Evidence for Roman occupation was identified in the form of metalled road surfaces. Evidence for medieval occupation was recorded, including a single mid-eleventh-century pit containing a dump of stone artefacts associated with craft working. Part of a large fourteenth-century aisled hall was identified at the northern limit of the site (possibly the house of Richard le Mercer). Part of the medieval city wall was recorded and the associated thirteenth-century bank was investigated. Evidence was found for damage to and repairs of the city wall during the Civil War. The use of gardens adjacent to the city wall were revealed through a combination of archaeological and documentary evidence. A seventeenth-century timber structure on the city wall was identified as an arbour, associated with the nearby Talbot Inn. | |||||||||||||||
