Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Petrological examinations of RB native pottery from the W Midlands shows that most of it was made in the Malvern district, presumably by specialist potters. This tradition seems to continue from that of the pre-Roman Iron Age W2B and W3B wares (forthcoming publication). Commonest of the RB types is a tubby cooking pot with burnished vertical streaks; its associations are mainly Hadrianic-Antonine. Worcestershire and Herefordshire have the heaviest distribution of these Malvern wares, which occur at both civil and military sites; but Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds have none. Copies of black-burnished forms confirm that this industry existed in 2nd cent, and a kiln found at Malvern Link in 1887 seems to have been producing wheel-made pottery, in two fabrics, in 3rd-4th cents. It seems therefore that a pre-Roman pottery industry survived the Conquest to become completely Romanised; and this suggests a need to reassess the status of handmade RB pottery in other areas (see also 68/146). | |||||||||||
