Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An old Jersey farm-complex, three separate houses around a courtyard, was investigated by archaeological techniques (no documents to assist). The oldest is the 'Hamptonne' building, in which a complex history of many alterations was revealed. A 15th century hall and cross-passage, with fireplace and storage room with floor above, was rearranged in 16th century with a first-floor great hall. In late 16th the S wall was rebuilt on a different line and a new four-bay roof with three kingpost trusses (surviving) was erected. In 17th century the E end was rebuilt as a dower wing and the hall was divided. Many 18th, 19th, and 20th century alterations resulted in much loss of information. Generally the house indicates a shortage of timber in 16th-17th centuries, and a lack of lime and paint. | ||||||||||||
