Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses how the place-name changed between 887 and 987 (based on evidence from charters) probably as a result of the manorialisation of the former complex Anglo-Saxon estate. The origins of the two names are also considered: Readanora possibly relates to the colour of the soil which is very red in some parts of the area and very important for those who depended on it for their existence; and Pyrton means pear-orchard which may point to an economy based on this type of horticulture. |
