Abstract:
A report describing aspects of the excavations at the site prior to redevelopment, particularly the medieval remains. The introduction and acknowledgements are followed by appraisals of the four excavations. The earliest feature from 31--34 Church Street: site A (81-110) was a Mid-Saxon ditch. A sequence of occupation was recovered which demonstrated how the site became fully utilised by two tenements before partial abandonment in the fifteenth century. Discoveries included building, oven and hearth remains, although the site was dominated by rubbish pits and wells. Two salvage excavations at Selfridges: site SEL and Westgate: site W (111--29) revealed few structures and many pits, also providing detailed sections through Castle Street and Church Street showing how the streets had developed from the early-tenth century. The town wall of the thirteenth century was excavated along with a possible granary of the Greyfriars at `Littlegate, site D' by Brian Durham (130--40). The excavation of the Greyfriars: site B (140--94) revealed eight phases of the church up to the Dissolution when the building was demolished, leaving some fragments which were incorporated into the post-medieval property boundaries. Documentary evidence is discussed for each site individually. There is a small section on the pre-medieval evidence including `Prehistoric finds: worked flint and pottery' (196) and `Roman tiles from Church Street (site A)' by Maureen Mellor (196). The medieval evidence is then recorded in detail, with specialist reports on: `Pottery' by Maureen Mellor (196--219); `Coins and jettons' by Marion Archibald (219--23); `Copper-alloy objects' by Alison R Goodall with a `Spur' by Blanche Ellis (223--6); `Lead and lead-alloy objects' by Geoff Egan & Alison Goodall (227); `Iron objects' by Ian H Goodall with a `Spur' by Blanche Ellis (227--31); `Bone, ivory and antler objects from Church Street (site A)' by Geoff Egan (231); `Vessel-glass' by Jeremy Haslam with contribution by Justine Bayley (231--6); `Stone objects from Church Street (site A)' by Geoff Egan (236--9); `Painted window-glass' by Jill Kerr (239--40); `The worked stone from Greyfriars (site B)' by John Blair with a note by Robin Emmerson (241--47); `Daub' by Julian Munby (247); `Painted wall-plaster' by Julian Munby (247--8); `Tiles' by Maureen Mellor (248--55); `Human remains from Greyfriars (site B)' by Eric Edwards & Mary Harman (255--7); and `Medieval animal bones and marine shells from Church Street and other sites in St Ebbe's, Oxford' by Bob Wilson with Alison Locker & B Marples (258--68). The final section is a conclusion entitled `The archaeology, history and topography of St Ebbe's from the Late Saxon period to the Dissolution' (268--77). Au(adp)
