Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavations within the town revealed three sunken-featured buildings of probable sixth- to early seventh-century date, perhaps representing the earliest occupation of Bicester. Evidence of mid-Saxon settlement remains elusive, possibly reflecting a shift in the focus of occupation. An important group of five late Saxon timber buildings along with a small number of other structures, ditches and pits were largely confined to the west half of the site. The buildings were not all contemporaneous, employed various construction techniques, and one was unusually large and bow-sided. They were probably part of a lay settlement associated with the Saxon minster across the river. The restricted range of finds included charred plant remains which are of some interest. The site became `backlands' from the later twelfth century, behind burgage plots within the medieval new town. Includes: | |||||||||||||||||
