Abstract:
The excavation revealed a possible ritual pit and a shallow gully dating to the Early Iron Age, which may relate to other known prehistoric monuments nearby. The presence of sherds of imported North French Blackware dated to the eighth or ninth century AD adds to the evidence for a Mid Saxon minster at Bampton, and an evolving arrangement of property boundary ditches probably reflects the evolution of associated settlement from the tenth to the thirteenth centuries AD. The site appeared to have been abandoned in the fourteenth century, and exploited for gravel quarrying. The foundations of a late medieval barn were also revealed. Includes:
