Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Paper based on a lecture delivered to the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society in 2005, which takes as its starting point a first-century AD Roman tombstone, the fragments of which were discovered in 2003 during excavations of Alchester's town wall foundations. The author goes on to consider other known evidence for the origins and early history of the Roman settlement of Alchester near Bicester, including the fortress; the importance and historical implications of this evidence; and the potential for and threats to the survival of other remains, so far undiscovered. | ||||||
