Abstract:
SP457405. The earliest (12th-century) defence was a thick embanked curtain wall, perhaps with a narrow ditch. A substantial stone building inside the wall had been burnt out and altered. It was truncated in 13th or 14th century by an 18m-wide ditch and bank, part of a complete reconstruction of the castle in concentric style in which the new ditch and another sandwiched a series of round tower foundations, including a gatehouse. A curved wall and bastion (?) were added in 17th century. Pottery, small finds and animal bones are catalogued. D F R
