Abstract:
Gives an outline summary of the development control work undertaken by the County Archaeological Service during the year before presenting summaries of selected projects, including: geophysical survey which identified an enclosure and linear features, followed by recording of prehistoric features during an evaluation at Southam Road, Banbury; identification of potentially important deposits at Greys Road, Henley-on-Thames, close to the scheduled Palaeolithic site at Greys Farm; undated linear features and small pits at the CABI site immediately north of Grim's Ditch at Wallingford; a cluster of pits from which small amounts of Roman and late Anglo-Saxon pottery were recovered at Cranford House School, Moulsford; areas of Iron Age and Roman settlement and a large Bronze Age boundary ditch at Great Western Park, Didcot; excavation of the remains of a windmill at South-West Bicester; Roman and medieval pits and a number of inhumations at High Street, Dorchester; geophysical survey and the subsequent excavation of Iron Age features at the site of a new solar farm north of Fringford; excavation of a medieval occupation site in Milcombe; post-medieval features at the Precinct Shopping Centre in Abingdon; identification of features likely to represent a small later prehistoric farmstead at Drayton Road, Abingdon; evidence of Roman occupation at the Fitzharris Public House, Abingdon; recording of a section across Grim's Ditch and evidence of two medieval buildings as well as other features at Ditchley. Work at the Historic Environment Record has included completion of the pilot phase of a Historic Landscape Characterisation project for the county. LD
