Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Work in advance of the A66 road realignment occasioned the complete excavation of two buildings and the planning (but not excavation) of a further nine. There are details of `The structure of the timber building' by David J A Taylor (127--8) which underlay stone houses B1 and B2 in the east vicus. The finds section begins with details of the coins (predominantly typical of northern British assemblages of the late second to late third or early fourth centuries AD). Iron small finds include weaponry, tools, chains and mounts. Copper alloy items were mostly decorative in nature, being either horse furnishings or brooches. A short section on jet and shale objects is succeeded by that concerning a group of counters, one of which is shale, the others samian, coarseware and lead. A colour coated pottery lamp, round lead pig and two whetstones are noted prior to `The pipe-clay figurines' by Miranda Green (145 & 147--8). Other separately authored or specific subject reports follow in the order: `The glass' by Sally Cottam (148--55); `The querns' by Adam Gwilt (155--8); `The animal bones' (159--60); `The charcoal samples' by A M Donaldson (160--1) noting that this report was prepared in 1976; `The pottery' by A T Croom & P T Bidwell (161--80); and finally the `Graffiti' by R S O Tomlin (180). | |||||||||||||||
