Various readings and drawings of the stone since its discovery are discussed in detail, and the reading rex magnus preferred to that of regis legati Augusti (traditionally accepted). Rex magnus may indicate that after Cogidubnus succeeded to the original Atrebatic territories further lands were subsequently granted to him, on the analogy of the equivalent Hellenistic title basileus megas. The inscription need not be pre-Vespasianic, nor need C's death be placed in the 60s. A T
