Abstract:		 Since Hanson's 1978 paper more information has become available, in particular at Carlisle, where timber survival indicates that the Roman fort rampart needed 2200m3 of timber strapping and over 12 acres of turf. Woodland occurrence is insufficiently known to determine whether local wood sufficed everywhere, but coppicing was undoubtedly practised for hurdling, wall panels, and the like; a 4-acre fort might need over 50 000 poles.
