Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
All the evidence of extramural settlement is summarized. Official buildings and facilities include: an annexe, probably a temporary construction camp; a large bath-house (1st-4th centuries); a mansio of three timber phases followed by 2nd and late 3rd-mid 4th century stone buildings; a large amphitheatre, c AD 90-350, over a smaller timber one; parade ground; harbour; religious buildings. In the civilian settlement, established by the end of the 1st century, stone buildings replaced timber in the 2nd, and an outlying defensive system may have enclosed the canabae in the 3rd century.
