Abstract:
Salvage excavation records of 1963-4 reveal that a collapsed roof section of the baths had contained interconnected hollow ceramic tubes in five continuous lines forming one rib of the vaulted roof of the tepidarium. The construction method is discussed and compared with other examples in the Roman Empire. Two other legionary bases, York and Caerleon, have produced these tubuli lingulati: do all three belong to early 3rd century?
