Review-article on M Todd (ed), Research on Roman Britain 1960-89 (1989): see 90/479. The sixteen papers in general convey the impression that 'theory' is for prehistorians, though a few Romanists are trying out unfamiliar approaches. The volume is difficult to use and contains little in the way of synthesis (partly because of a publication backlog which 'approaches epic proportions'). Both stimulation and frustration can be found in the volume, but it is now clearer which new directions should be taken. | |||
