Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A comparison of the samian by stamp-dies from Antonine Scotland, from Hadrian's Wall, and from selected forts in the hinterland of the latter, shows an overlap so small between Scotland and the rest that the two walls cannot have been held simultaneously for more than the briefest period, and this with other evidence implies that Scotland was evacuated under Calpurnius Agricola. A study of Flavian Scotland suggests that the post-Agricolan withdrawal in 84-7 was from all sites north of the isthmus, and the second phase involved a considerable thinning of garrisons in the Lowlands before the evacuation, which was by 105 at latest. There is a lack in Scotland, apart from the comparison already referred to, of (i) stamps in common with Wroxeter gutter and Pudding Pan Rock (160-200), (ii) late Antonine plain samian on military sites, (iii) decorated-ware potters believed to be post-160. A scheme of occupations for c 140 to 211/2 is given. Appendices provide details of important points raised in the text. B D | ||||
