Abstract:
TQ 677730. Possibly the out-building of a villa, this structure stood on the site of earlier, probably 1st century, occupation, and consisted of a basement and upper storey, served apparently by independent entrances. In Phase I the building is undatable, but evidence suggests that the upper storey served as living-quarters and the basement, closely similar to two other Kentish examples, as a cellar, perhaps for wine. Before the end of 3rd century the basement was possibly converted to living-quarters with a corner staircase; during Phase III, preceding the building's destruction by fire c 300 or just before, it may have become an ergastulum (slave-quarters). At this time the upper storey was a store-room. After the fire the site was abandoned, and levelled late in 4th century. Appendices treat the pottery, coins, window glass, painted plaster, ventilator and environmental evidence. A T
