TL 828178. Recent rescue work uncovered part of the W wing, beneath which lay the rectilinear timber buildings of a large Iron Age settlement. Two masonry buildings of Flavian date, one raised on a podium, were discovered. Black-and-white mosaics and one polychrome example, together with wall-paintings and marble wall-veneers, were found in these buildings. After a fire in late 2nd century AD both were altered; an ?aisled barn was added in 4th century. Evidence was also found of peaceful coexistence during 5th century by Romano-British and Anglo-Saxons, and of continuing Saxon occupation. AT See also abstract 74/2806. | |||||||||||||||||
