Abstract:
The orthodox view is that the central government took almost two years to regain control of Britain. Reconsideration of the literary evidence, particularly as it concerns Severus' rank, suggests that the conspiracy was in June 367, with a rapid sequence of events culminating in Theodosius' arrival and rescue of London before the end of the 367 campaigning season. The 368 season would be entirely taken up with the further events of Ammianus' narrative; and the speed and economy of military effort testify to Theodosius' skill. The omission of Valentia from Festus' list of provinces is insignificant.
