TL 157976. Excavations between 1967 and 1973 of the site first discovered from the air have shown that a 27-acre fortress with timber buildings, accommodating a legionary vexillation and auxiliary troops, was succeeded by an 11-acre fort. The period of occupation extended from c 4418 to c 62. To SE of the fortress cropmarks of a native farmstead at Orton Stanch have been investigated to reveal that a large industrial site (not reported here) replaced the farmstead. Appendices treat small finds, coins, pottery, glass, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and animal bones. Au(abr) | ||||||||||
