Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Evidence from excavations at Balkerne Lane, Lion Walk and elsewhere in the town is drawn together to provide a tentative layout of the legionary fortress in the W half of the town, examine the development of the street pattern, and compare Colchester with other coloniae in Britain. Six phases were recorded in Balkerne Lane, the sequence of the monumental gateway revised, and the canabae outside the gate planned. The wider defensive pattern of the area (including a fort newly discovered at Gosbecks) (see 78/5571) is also discussed. | ||||||||
