Eric Birley's suggestion that two governors, father and son, or grandson, both named Ulpius Marcellus, can be postulated from inscriptions is probably erroneous. Reevaluation of RIB 1329 and 1463 in this light indicates that Chesters and possibly Benwell could have been occupied by the same regiments in both the 2nd and 3rd centuries. A T |
