Abstract:
Comparison of the RCHM volume Eburacum and the York section of Collingwood & Wright's Roman Inscriptions of Britain (RIB) suggests that RIB, though giving many better readings than RCHM, is often less helpful on the wider significance of the texts. A discussion on the name and status of York in Roman times leads into detailed notes on, and some further elucidation of, fourteen inscriptions from the city.
