Abstract
Abstract
The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:
This paper presents the results of fieldwork at Hill Pits, Blaenavon, sunk in the 1830s in order to supply the Blaenavon Ironworks with iron ore and coal. As well as the pits themselves, the major part of a communication system comprising a tramroad and inclined plane with the remains of a brake engine are present. The paper outlines the geology and historical background to the site before describing the field evidence. The conclusion considers the dating of elements of the site with reference to OS mapping of the 1880s, and the relationship of Hill Pits to nearby sites. LD
