Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The market town of Thame in Oxfordshire retains its medieval town plan and many of its original burgage plots. It has been largely unaffected by the kinds of later development that have reshaped many 12th and 13th century planned towns. Several surviving buildings trace their origins to structures erected in medieval times, most notably in the market place infill. This article reports on a study concerning Thame's morphological framework, speculating on what features of the local landscape may have influenced the shape of the new town. It also speculates on the evolution of the town itself, and how its distinctive shape results from a combination of different morphological patterns relating to both urban and pre-urban functions. | ||||
