Abstract:
Reports on the excavation of twenty-five pipe bowls, apparently the result of the deposition of waste material during the construction of a road c. 1855 AD. The design of one of these pipes, featuring a human head (probably a representation of a British military figure from the Crimean War period 1853--56), is exactly the same as that of another example, found in Great Ann Street. This is used to suggest a link between the new finds and the Bye family of pipe manufacturers.
