Abstract:		 Reports on the excavations conducted in 1989 to uncover the remains of the twelfth-century stone keep for public display. The motte and bailey ditches were also partially investigated . The results are discussed in relation to previous work on the site. The section on `The Finds' is by G L Good (33--45). Copper-alloy and iron objects and animal remains are not covered, but there are reports on: stone, bone and lead objects, `The pottery' by Rod Burchill (35--8); clay tobacco-pipes; glass vessels; and building stone.
