Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
There is a body of information about the geological distribution of heavy minerals, identification of which in pottery can give information on provenance of materials. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the archaeological application of the technique, and to review its progress. The technique overcomes the disadvantage of thin sectioning, which often reveals nothing but quartz grains in clay. The pottery is crushed and the heavy minerals separated by flotation and examined under a petrological microscope. Precise experimental details, being available in textbooks, are not given, but points specific to pottery are discussed. Investigations into the source of Neolithic, Romano-British and Dark Age pottery are described (see also 68/120). AJC | |||||
