Abstract:		 Describes results of an augur and test-pit survey of the valley bottom (conducted in 1983 and 1984), which had two main aims: to evaluate the late Pleistocene and Holocene environmental and archaeological record, and to redress biases in research towards the visible remains on the surrounding slopes and plateaux. Soils and sediments, dated by radiocarbon and thermoluminescence, provided a sequence from the late Pleistocene to present day. The archaeological evidence, although concealed, was found to add significantly to that from adjacent areas. There are reports on `Mesolithic and Neolithic archaeology', by S Davies & A Whittle (151--3), `Plant remains', by Jane Fitt (154--5), `Prehistoric finds', by A Whittle (169--72), and `Ostracods', by H I Griffiths & R Mount (181--2).
