Abstract:
Excavations in 1962--63 by Piggott and Atkinson revealed a two-phase monument. Wayland's Smithy I is a small oval barrow containing a mortuary structure (which Whittle interprets as embanked and box-like) with the remains of at least fourteen human skeletons. A charcoal sample from the interval before phase II gave a date of 3700--3390 BC. Wayland's Smithy II consists of a low sarsen-kerbed trapezoidal barrow with flanking ditches. From a southern façade a short passage led to a transepted chamber roofed with capstones; the western transept had contained human burials. The monuments were built over thin chalk soil in open surroundings and molluscan evidence shows subsequent regeneration of woodland. Wayland's Smithy provides important evidence for the sequence and development of Neolithic mortuary structures and burials. Includes reports on `The human bone' by D Brothwell & R Cullen (72-80), `Land mollusca' by M P Kerney (88--90) and `Animal bones' by N Gardner (90--2). BOC
