Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Among EBA gold lunulae from Ireland three groups are definable Classical, Provincial and Unaccomplished. They differ not only by manner of decoration, use of motifs and observance of symmetry, but also by flexibility, weight and ratio of width to thickness. The last trait has statistical significance for classifying purposes. The Classical lunulae contain more gold and are beaten both thinner and wider than the other types; they show a masterly, usually asymmetrical handling of motifs derived from the Beaker pottery repertoire (including one like, but pre-dating, the necklace spacer-plates of Wessex 1). They are mostly confined to Ireland. The Unaccomplished lunulae are thicker, narrower, and use less gold. The ornament is more closely copied from the Beaker prototypes. They are found only in Ireland, and there are three variants within the group. The Provincial group have distinctive terminals, greater rigidity, and use simple dot-line or linear ornament; they have a wide distribution. Lunulae as a whole can be dated c 1700 BC. | ||
