TV 557956. On a cliff edge and suffering continual erosion is an earthwork-enclosed multi-phase Beaker domestic complex of which 1100sq metres have now been excavated. Predictably, subsoil erosion has telescoped the stratification and only deep post-holes remain, but the technique of trend mapping assisted in identifying probable structures. The earliest occupation was by people using All Over Corded beakers and practising cultivation. The second occupation, a little further along the site, was associated with East Anglian beakers and the cultivation of emmer and barley. To this phase probably belong the larger enclosure (ditch inside bank) of the two on site, two of the huts, some ?grain storage pits and flint-knapping areas. Eventually a third living-site came into use. A ?burial cairn lay just outside the enclosure, and the entire complex is discussed in terms of possible connexions between living and "ritual" sites of Beaker peoples. Included are discussions of the abundant flint scrapers and of seed remains and mollusca. | |||||||||||
