SD 483757. Excavation was designed to find evidence of initial Neolithic penetration of the Morecambe Bay area, for which there was already a quantity of pollen evidence. Human activity on the site was indicated by a carved piece of timber, flint and chert waste, ?charred boards and a rim fragment from a wooden vessel. There was also a scatter of socket-like holes and a group of tree-stumps and fallen trunks, but the pollen record indicated closed forest conditions with little anthropogenic trace. The artefact level here appears to correlate with a point perhaps 300-400 years before the primary elm decline at Hawes Water nearby, where a much fuller pollen diagram also shows the first slight but consistent traces of human interference. A single 14C date for Storrs Moss lay in mid-3rd millennium, whereas cross-correlation would suggest a date about a millennium earlier. | ||||||||
