Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The first large-scale excavation of a semi-defensive site of a type common in the Upper Severn Valley revealed ephemeral Meso-Beaker activity, followed in 3rd century bc by a triple-ditched enclosure covering about 2.5ha, probably for a fairly high status extended family. It was altered in 1st century bc to a double-ditched enclosure. Occupation during those three centuries centred on several round houses and four-poster structures at any one time. Small-scale metalworking was practised and mixed farming included growing of three types of cereal; the only pottery was the ?Cheshire Plain coarse ?salt-containers. Occupation may have continued into 4th century AD at a relatively low social level. A drying kiln dates to 15th century. | ||||||||||
