Abstract:
Reports the results of survey and excavation in 1992 and 1993, undertaken in advance of road construction. The area lay to the east of the castle, characterised by a large enclosure surrounded by a defensive ditch evident as a cropmark. Some pre-medieval activity, including Neo flintwork, BA pits, and RB field system aligned with Ryknild Street was seen. The main period of occupation was the late twelfth to early thirteenth centuries. Timber buildings, a malting kiln and cess pit were among the features recovered. The village was abandoned by 1225 AD. There are separately authored details on: `Historical background' by G M D Booth (8--14) including appendices providing `Note on sources consulted' (13) and `Lands of Ralph the Butler' (13--14); `Medieval pottery and tile' by Stephanie Ratkai (45--54); silver and copper alloy objects include very brief note on the `Roman brooch' by G Lloyd Morgan (56); ironwork (every category) including a note on `Metalworking residues' by A Russell & P Budd (60--2); `Prehistoric pottery' by Alex Gibson (62 & 63); `Roman pottery' by Jeremy Evans (64--5); `Animal bone' by Stephanie Pinter-Bellows (65--73); and `Plant remains' by Lisa Moffett (74--85).
