Abstract:
Discusses some of the forty-six mosaics recorded by archaeologists since major excavation was initiated in 1898 by W Page and C V Bicknell and notes the work of several artists who reproduced them, including paintings attributed to Gordon Godfrey. Also compares the design of the Verulamium mosaics with examples from Colchester and considers that they may be the work of the same second century itinerant craftsman. Highlights the problems in dating the later mosaics and suggests that the industry changed considerably in the fourth century with commissions from different areas of society, as evidenced in floors from the rear apartments of shops.
