Excavation of a crop-mark site revealed a ring-ditch containing internal structures. Pottery and radiocarbon dating indicated that the main structural phase fell between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries AD. Since the site was initially assumed to be prehistoric, this dating suggests a degree of caution when interpreting crop-mark sites and designing fieldwork programmes.
