Describes archaeological evaluation of a large rectilinear moated enclosure at the reputed birthplace of Sir William Wallace. Excavation across the moat revealed it to be a wide, flat-bottomed, ditch, its inner edge faced by a battered and mortared rubble wall. Artefacts and radiocarbon date suggest this enclosure was medieval, but most material recovered from the interior of the site related to post-medieval use. Includes: | |||||||||||
