Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Agricola's campaigns and intentions are analysed. The halt in AD 81 may have been on instructions from Rome, while the invasion of Ireland may have been considered as an alternative to a northern advance. Agricola's successor constructed the forts north of the isthmus and intended to occupy the Highlands. Troop withdrawals prevented this and resulted in the abandonment of the glen-blocking forts and the construction of watchtowers on the Gask Ridge and elsewhere, which were themselves abandoned c 90. All troops were withdrawn from Scotland peacefully c 105. The reasons for the advance in 140 and the withdrawal c 165 and the nature of the two Antonine phases are discussed. The 'Caracallan' system of patrolling was established in the second century, possibly even by Calpurnius Agricola c 165. It survived, with changes, to 367. DJB | |||
