Rescue excavations were carried out on part of a medieval inhumation cemetery in a roadside location outside the east gate of Roman Caerwent. Radiocarbon dating places the majority of the burials in the sixth/seventh century AD. The burials were a mixture of cist, stone lined, and simple dug graves, arranged roughly in rows. A Type G penannular brooch was associated with the burials. The cemetery is discussed in detail and then an analysis of both the status and character of Dark Age Caerwent is put forward in order to place the cemetery in its historical context. A summary of Roman and post-medieval findings of the excavation is also included. | |||||||||||||||||
